Bad Idea: 5 Things to Never Do When Remodeling Your Kitchen

January 29, 2026

As one of Orlando's premier kitchen and bathroom remodeling firms, we spend most of our time sharing great ideas and what you should do when remodeling your kitchen. However, sometimes it's good for prospective clients to learn more about what *not to do* as they approach what should be a once-in-a-lifetime renovation.

5 Things That Undermine a Successful Kitchen Remodel

Here are five things you should never do; that can undermine - or destroy - what would have been a successful and high-quality remodel.

1. Not Taking a Timeless Design Approach

We mentioned that a full kitchen remodel should be a once-in-a-lifetime event. They're a tremendous amount of work and expense - and not something you want to do every five to ten years. Designing for the *now* - rather than keeping the future in mind - is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make.

A kitchen remodel should strike a balance between function and form that honors how you use the kitchen today and how it might evolve over the next decade or so. Without insights from professional designers/builders, you run the risk of completing a remodel that is overfocused on current needs, trends, and their ultimate wish list.

When clients try to have it all, they often wind up:

  • Missing out on a customized layout and storage spaces.
  • With wasted valuable space.
  • With overcrowded cabinets on the island.
  • Saving a little money at the outset on inferior products that will cost more in the long run.
  • Overwhelmed with a small kitchen space rather than having learned how to optimize it.

Beyond that, long-term vision and a timeless design approach keep these tenets in mind.

  • Fixtures and finishes that never go completely out of style.
  • Neutral colors on long-term fixtures, trendy colors in areas where they can be easily covered over or exchanged (wall paint, area rugs, wall-hung decor, etc).
  • A kitchen that's easily accessible to anyone, especially if you plan to age in place or have aging parents/friends as regular guests.
  • Kitchen storage, appliances, and stations that work now and also accommodate a growing - or aging - family.

Timeless should always trump trendy in any remodel or major renovation.

2. Giving the Job to a Handy Friend or Family Member

We appreciate you may have a very handy friend or family member or one with ties to the construction industry. However, unless they are an experienced, licensed kitchen remodeling contractor and treat your remodel as if you're any other valued customer, resist the urge to use friends and family discounts.

There's a reason they say never to mix business with pleasure, and a botched or unfinished remodel is a prime example of why not. If anything goes south during the process, and you aren't backed with professional estimates, agreements, contracts, and proof of the contractor's license, bonding, and insurance - you're out of luck if legal/financial recourse is required.

3. Deciding To Become a YouTube Kitchen Remodeling (Amateur) Pro

We love YouTube and similar sources that teach everyday people to perform daily home maintenance and general DIY housing projects. However, there is nothing basic or simple about kitchen remodeling.

Designing and building a full kitchen remodel is *never* a DIY project. It demands several experienced and nuanced skill sets:

  • Looking at the space with the fresh eyes of a designer/builder to determine whether a different layout would enhance the functional and aesthetic space.
  • Recognizing if existing plumbing, electrical, insulation, etc. is up to code.
  • Eliminating any mold/mildew or moisture control issues from historic leaks.
  • Addressing any surprises with compromised structural anatomy or support.
  • Skilled electrical, plumbing, and carpentry experience.
  • Knowing how to take precise measurements that ensure the correct fit and installation of materials.

We could go on and on, but the difference between a professionally finished kitchen remodel and a DIY version is evident the minute anyone walks into a kitchen space. Why put in all of the expense, time, and effort for second-class results?

4. Creating an Unrealistic Budget

There is far more to creating a kitchen remodeling budget than adding up the costs of your fixtures and finishes wish list. One of many DIY homeowners' biggest mistakes is creating a budget that doesn't accommodate their true needs and wants. Or, their budget doesn't allow for a 10% to 15% contingency or emergency fund to account for things like unexpected issues found during demolition, to bring their existing structure to code, or accommodate unforeseen material or labor costs (which happen all the time).

In the end, this type of unrealistic budgeting often forces homeowners to cut corners and compromise on the quality of things like:

  • Appliances
  • Cabinets
  • Countertops
  • Structural issues or outdated infrastructure

When you hire a licensed, reputable contractor like DCG, the budgeting process is open, transparent, and accurate. The price of materials is based on their quality and longevity, and a detailed contract outlines all the steps, costs, and necessary contingencies.

5. Hiring the First Contractor You Find

A successful remodel depends on having the right team in place. Never hire the first contractor you find (especially if they offer a too-good-to-be-true price). Instead, invest time into researching at least three to five local, reputable contractors.

When vetting a contractor, always ask for the following:

  • Proof of licensure, bonding, and insurance (never work with an uninsured contractor).
  • Client testimonials and online reviews.
  • A portfolio of past kitchen projects (ideally with high-quality photos).
  • A detailed, written estimate/contract.
  • References from past clients (and take the time to call them).
  • Confirmation of who will be leading the project (a licensed contractor or the homeowner).

We've created a comprehensive guide on questions to ask a general contractor before you hire them. Use it to ensure you hire the right fit for your project.
