Top 3 Things to Consider Before Renovating Your Kitchen
January 29, 2026
When done right, a kitchen remodel yields a high ROI, but that requires thorough "pre-renovation" homework.
While we understand how exciting it is to start choosing countertops, flooring, and custom cabinetry, there are a few things you need to consider beforehand - knowing that all eye-catching decisions will flow from there.
3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting a Kitchen Remodel
The more you plan a kitchen renovation around how you use your kitchen today and how you see it evolving into the future (including the resale potential), the more satisfying, timeless, and efficient the process will be.
Here are three questions to ask yourself before starting a kitchen remodel. The more you can share with your design and build team, the better they'll be able to provide a five-star kitchen remodeling experience.
1. How do you use your kitchen the most?
Kitchen remodeling trends abound, but they may include things you don't really need or want - so why include them?
For example, there's no point in giving up space for a temperature-controlled wine cabinet if wine only emerges at the occasional holiday meal. On the other hand, if you drink wine while you prepare nightly dinners, it's time to splurge on that wine cabinet, after all!
To answer this first question, think about:
Which of these activities are most likely to take place in your kitchen on a daily basis?
- Morning and coffee and conversations
- Home office work
- The kids' homework or crafting
- Amateur chef-style cooking
- Frozen food prep
- Baking
- Eating meals in the kitchen
- Neighborhood kids and yours coming in and out for snacks
While daily activities should be taken into the lion's share of consideration, we also want to know if you regularly do any of these.
- Host semi-formal cocktail hours for friends or themed dinners with other couples
- Have people over for casual social gatherings - book club, watching a sports game, etc.
- Host holidays
- And so on.
Do you see yourself in this kitchen for the next 10, 20, or 30 years?
If so, odds are you'll never regret integrating stylish age-in-place features that will benefit you in the long run. In the meantime, those same accessible improvements will make your kitchen feel more welcoming and inclusive for the senior loved ones or any family/friends/guests with mobility issues.
Once we know more about how your kitchen functions daily, weekly, and seasonally, we'll better know how to optimize the workflow.
2. What Are Your Must-Haves (And What Drives You Crazy?)
These questions are two sides of the same coin. We like to start with the positive, but we also know that the most effective solutions result from the answers to "What drives you crazy?" or "What frustrates you most?" about your existing kitchen. Make a list—and don't hold back—about everything you wish was different or that frustrates you about your kitchen as it is right now.
Follow that up with an exciting list of must-haves. These will play a significant role in creating the kitchen remodeling budget. After completing the must-have list, begin accumulating the "wish list" of things you'd love to have but that aren't make-or-break features.
3. Who are you hiring to do the work?
We can assure you that a DIY kitchen remodel is not the way to go unless you're a licensed contractor yourself. This is also not the time to hire friends or family because you can wind up with an unfinished remodel that's over budget with no reasonable recourse for getting you out of the snafu.
It's always best to consult with at least three different contractors, asking all the right questions, to find your perfect fit. This means finding the licensed contractor with the right experience, tools, team, reputation, and evidence of recent work - and that you also feel comfortable working with day in and day out for the next 8 to 12 weeks (or more, depending on the scope of work).
